MNM Digital Media Expert Summer Job

A couple of weeks ago I entered a competition to win a summer job as a Digital Media Expert at MNM, one of Belgium’s biggest radio stations.

I got a phone call two weeks ago on Thursday that I had made it to the second round and that they wanted to speak to me face to face and asking if I could make it to Brussels that evening. After telling them that that was not at all a possibility as I was in Suriname they said they’d bring my idea to the table and contact me if they still wanted to talk to me. I thought that would be the end of it. I was a little sad but not hugely disappointed as I thought there was a slim chance of me actually winning.

On Saturday I got an email saying they still wanted to talk to me, and if I could come on Skype between 3 and 4.30pm on Monday. I would have to leave work early to make it, but I did not think that would be a problem. I sent an email to work asking if I could go home early as I had an important interview, and an email to MNM saying I’d be able to make it around 4pm.

On Monday I did the Skype interview. I would say it went extremely well. They liked my idea but, more importantly, I had all the skills they asked about. I have experience making videos (thanks to my trip to Norwich in February), I know how to work with WordPress, I have learned about User Experience Design, I know PhotoShop, I have a driver’s license,… I was very happy after the interview. They said they would let me know in the next day or two whether I got the job.

On Tuesday I got an email saying I had won the job and would be working for MNM for a month this summer! I was so happy. They also told me they would call me live during the broadcast on Wednesday when they were going to announce the winner.

On Wednesday I left the Phagwa party early to take the phone call. The first call broke off right before I was supposed to go on air because I ran out of credit. It is expensive to get a phone call from Belgium. After adding more credit they called me back and I was interviewed live on MNM. They asked me what I was doing in Suriname, why I started studying New Media and Communication Technology, what I was going to do at MNM this summer,… I felt elated after the interview. It still hadn’t quite sunk in that I got the job!

I am really looking forward to it. I am not quite sure yet when I will start, as I am in New York City until July 12.
